The Seldom Home bluegrass band crystallized in its first version on a street corner in south St. Louis in 1996 during a benefit festival for KDHX-FM88 a St. Louis community radio station. The band members, Bill Callahan, Terry Lairmore, Jeff Moley and Gen Obata, bring together a diverse musical background influenced by jazz, rock and roll, folk, bluegrass and country. The Seldom Home sound, rich in harmony vocals and instrumentals, offers original songs as well as adaptations of traditional bluegrass songs.

Bass player Bill Callahan works as a contractor by day and as "Wild Bill," a veteran bluegrass player with more than 25 years experience, at night and on weekends. Bill has played in such local bands as The Davis County Express, Countryside Grass, The Strange Rangers and The Meramec Jets. He has shared the stage with numerous national acts, notably Tony Rice and The Dixie Chicks. He had the privilege of playing bass with the late Tiny Tim during a visit to Soulard.

Banjo-player and vocalist Terry Lairmore, dubbed "the bluegrass Pavarotti" by fellow band members, is a cancer surgeon in St. Louis. His musical background includes the influences of James Taylor and John Denver. He became a student of the Scruggs-style banjo as a teenager and now focuses on traditional bluegrass banjo styles. Terry contributes soft, melodic lead vocals for a majority of the band's songs.

Jeff "Doc" Moley, a mandolin-player and vocalist, is also a cancer surgeon in St. Louis. He worked as a professional jazz guitarist in New York before going to medical school. Jeff, who studied mandolin under Butch Baldassari, now focuses his broad musical influences on the bluegrass mandolin. Jeff sings sharp, authentic tenor vocals for the Seldom Home's high lonesome sound.

Guitarist and vocalist Gen Obata is an architect and artist in St. Louis. Gen, who has been playing guitar for over 25 years, has a broad musical background which includes folk and rock-and-roll. He won the 1997 flat-pick guitar competition at the Illinois Traditional Copuntry Music Festival for his rapid-fire, flat-pick guitar playing. His unique personal style contributes much innovation to the Seldom Home sound. Gen, a prolific songwriter, also plays guitar for the Raven Moon band and performs as a solo act in the St. Louis area.

Since The Seldom Home's formation in 1996, the band has made numerous appearances in regional bluegrass festivals and has been active in the Missouri Area Bluegrass Committee. It has performed live on several local radio stations. The pinnacle of the Seldom Home's appearances was a recent invited performance at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis as part of the "Notes From Home" series. This acoustic concert was recorded for an upcoming Seldom Home live CD.

Bill Callahan left the group in 2002 and was replaced with Mike Brown, former bass player with the Jerry Rosa Stringworks Band.

Mike Brown left the group in 2005 and was replaced with Mark Lang.

Seldom Home ended their ten year run in 2006 when Terry Lairmore moved to Texas.
